After gaining his Diploma of Architecture in Australia in 1973, John’s career path led to the UK, where he has built an impressive portfolio of sport and leisure projects in Britain, Northern Ireland, Europe, UAE, Russia and South Africa.
John specialised in major sports projects in 1984, after a successful decade in the commercial sector, acquiring a wide spectrum of experience in headquarters, retail, educational and residential projects. This underlying understanding of business-case planning and engineering principles has been invaluable in creating a new generation of sustainable sporting facilities.
Some of the many exciting venues for which John was responsible include the acclaimed London O2 Arena, Milton Keynes Stadium, Benfica and Faro Stadiums in Portugal, Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg, Leeds Arena and the Olympique Lyonnais Stadium in Lyon.
As Senior Principal of the London office of POPULOUS (previously HOK Sport), John was responsible for an extraordinary expansion of the company into Europe, UAE and Russia in particular, building on POPULOUS projects such as Wembley Stadium, Arsenal Emirates Stadium, Ascot Racecourse, Wimbledon Centre Court, AVIVA Stadium, Manchester City Stadium, and the Olympic Stadiums in Sydney, London and Sochi. John was Team Populous Principal in charge of the master-planning and overlay team for the London 2012 Olympic Park.
Since his official retirement, John has continued to act as Senior Advisor to POPULOUS as well as becoming a Director of ESSMA SERVICES nv, the European Stadium Safety & Management Association, in order to share his unique perspective on the design, implementation and management of sports facilities throughout Europe and the Middle East.
He will educate The FBA Candidates on stadium development and stakeholder relations.
