My Internship in football at Atletico Ottawa by Ory Mimoun

Internship in football: Navigating Opportunities and Challenges at Atletico Ottawa with The FBA's Support

Today, we sat down with one of our Candidates from the 14th Edition, Ory Mimoun, who recently completed an internship in football with Atletico Ottawa

During this insightful interview, he shares his firsthand experience, discussing the skills he developed, the challenges he faced, and the lessons he learned.

This conversation highlights how internships not only shape careers but also provide a unique platform for growth and learning, setting the stage for future success.

Join us as we delve into the day-to-day experiences and transformative moments that shaped his time with Atletico Ottawa.

What drew you to your current internship opportunity, and how did FBA play a role in securing it?

The fact that the Canadian league is in its first stages of development and the amount of work to do there seemed the most impactful.
The moment Nicky (Nicolas Martin, The FBA Partnerships Manager) offered me I didn’t see the opportunity as it was but when I came back to him about that, he worked his best to make it happen for me and I was fortunate to be there with another FBA Student.

Was the promise of a program that secures internships for its students a key factor in your decision? If so, why?

The fact that I can finish my Master’s Degree with some experience in an actual club was a key factor in my decision because I feel like it’s something that differentiates me from other candidates for future job opportunities and can help me secure a job in the Football Industry

Can you describe a real-world challenge you faced during your internship and how you overcame it?

During my internship, I had to speak with a lot of people to try to market the club around the city and one of my weak spots is public speaking in French/English. During my time in the club and in Ottawa I learned to get around well with the languages and got confident enough in myself to keep reaching out and ameliorate the club.

How has your internship experience changed your perspective on working in the football industry?

Before coming to Atletico Ottawa, I just knew that I wanted to work in a football club but didn’t have a specific job description in mind.
During my time there, I got to learn about all of the departments in a football club, and now even though my internship took place in the Ticketing Department as an Account Manager, I got to learn about other departments that I liked very much and now I know I want to work as a Media Relations and Community Development in the future!

What is one piece of advice or lesson from The FBA that has been invaluable during your internship?

One lesson that I learned during my time at The FBA that really helped me in the internship is the Workshops for the Internships. It made me feel ready to work in a club without any experience prior in the field.

What makes your internship experience unique, and how does it align with your long-term career goals in football?

What made my internship unique is the fact that the whole club made me feel at home there, from the first day to the last.
More than that, I got the opportunity to learn about all the different business aspects of a Football Club and got to learn about myself and what I want to do in the future in the Football industry.
