Beyond the 90 Minutes

Inside Frantzis Arapis’ internship in Football Operations at Apollon Limassol FC Academy.

For most supporters, a football match begins when the referee blows the whistle. In reality, it starts long before kick-off. Behind every fixture are countless hours of planning, coordination and teamwork that keep a football club running smoothly. Most of that work goes unnoticed.

It was this side of the game that Frantzis Arapis discovered during his internship at Apollon Limassol FC Academy.

Now a student in the 17th edition of The FBA Professional Master in Football Business and currently completing Module 4 in Lisbon, Frantzis recently concluded his internship in Football Operations at Apollon Limassol FC Academy, gaining first-hand experience of the planning, logistics and collaboration that underpin the day-to-day running of a professional football organisation.

With a background in Law from Oxford Brookes University and a long-standing ambition to build a career in football, the experience offered a new perspective on the game, one that extends far beyond the action on the pitch and highlights the people and processes that make every matchday possible.

Behind Every Matchday

For Frantzis, one of the biggest takeaways from his internship was discovering the scale of the work required to keep a football organisation operating efficiently. Working within Apollon Limassol FC Academy’s Operations department gave him a front-row seat to the planning, coordination and teamwork that supporters rarely get to see.

No two days looked the same. His responsibilities evolved according to the club’s operational needs, from supporting academy operations and coordinating logistics to helping with matchday preparations and communicating with different stakeholders.

Looking back, Frantzis says the experience completely changed his perspective on what it takes to deliver a successful matchday:

“The most exciting part has probably been realising how much teamwork and coordination are needed behind the scenes. As fans, we mostly see what happens on the pitch, but working inside a club environment showed me how many people contribute every single day to make everything run smoothly.”

More Than Matchday Operations

While matchday preparations formed an important part of his experience, Frantzis also contributed across multiple projects and initiatives throughout the club. From academy administration and logistics to sponsor events, fan engagement initiatives and the ticketing process for the Cyprus Cup Final, the internship exposed him to a broad spectrum of operational responsibilities.

Working across different areas of the organisation gave him a broader understanding of how interconnected football operations really are. Every project required collaboration between departments, careful planning and the ability to adapt to changing priorities, reinforcing the importance of communication and coordination in a professional club environment.

Rather than experiencing football from a single perspective, the internship allowed Frantzis to contribute to different aspects of the club’s day-to-day activities, providing a holistic view of the operational work that supports players, staff, partners and supporters alike.

From the Classroom to the Club

For Frantzis, one of the most valuable aspects of the internship was seeing how concepts explored in the classroom translated into everyday decision-making within a professional football organisation. While lectures provided the theoretical foundations, working in a fast-paced club environment demonstrated how quickly those principles need to be applied in practice.

Whether supporting matchday operations, coordinating with colleagues or responding to last-minute changes, the experience reinforced the importance of organisation, communication and stakeholder management. It also highlighted that technical knowledge alone is only part of what it takes to succeed in football operations.

Reflecting on the experience, Frantzis believes some of the most valuable lessons came from working alongside experienced professionals in situations where adaptability and teamwork were essential:

“I think the biggest thing I am learning is how to adapt and make decisions in real working situations where things can change very quickly. That is something you cannot fully experience in a classroom. At The FBA, we spoke a lot about operations, communication, and stakeholder management, and I have already seen how important those concepts are during busy matchdays and events where organisation and teamwork are essential.”

A Foundation for the Future

Although the internship has come to an end, the experience has given Frantzis a much clearer understanding of what a career in football operations demands. Beyond developing practical skills, it reinforced the importance of staying adaptable, working collaboratively and embracing responsibility in a fast-moving professional environment.

Looking ahead, he aims to continue building on the foundations established during his time at Apollon Limassol FC Academy, learning from experienced professionals and developing the relationships that will support his future career in football.

Reflecting on the journey, Frantzis believes the experience offered something that extends beyond technical expertise:

“The FBA internship experience is the perfect way to turn your passion for football into real industry experience while learning what life inside a professional club is truly like.”
