Biography
Alexandre Mestre graduated in law from the University of Lisbon and holds Post-graduation Studies degrees : by University of Paris I, Pantheon Sorbonne, 1999 on EU’s Economic and Legal Studies; by University of Lisbon, 2004 on Legistics Studies : by Loughborough University / International Olympic Academy, 2005 on Olympic Studies. In 2007 he was awarded Masters Degree in European Studies, specializing in Legal Affairs by Catholic University of Lisbon. He is also undergoing his PhD programme in “EU Sports law “at Edge Hill University in the United Kingdom.
After graduation, he became Researcher at the College of Europe, Bruges (1999-2000). Since 2001 he worked as a lawyer at Farmers’ Confederation of Portugal and in private practice from 2005 to 2011. He was Professor at several institutions of Higher Education and the scope of his teaching has always been focused on EU law and Sports law. From 2002 to 2005 worked as Legal and International Relations Advisor for the Secretary of State for Youth and Sports and the Secretary of State for Sport and Rehabilitation. Also he was member of the Office who prepared the Independent European Sports Review (2006). He is author of several books, as well several articles published in scientific magazines and newspapers. Alexandre Miguel Mestre was member of the group for the Constitution of the Court of Arbitration for Sport, under the framework of Olympic Committee of Portugal (2007-2011) and also served as a member of Olympic Academy of Portugal board of directors (2002-2011).
In addition, he also served as Vice-President for Southern Europe at the International Sports Law Association (2004-2008). In 2010, he was considered by the International Business Sport Magazine as one of the 20 most influential lawyers in the world for Sports Law sector.
Alexandre is now working as a sport lawyer at Abreu Advogados, one of the most important law firm in Portugal.
